The JW, The Best Man, and The New Book

11 11 2013

I’m a little late getting out this ministry update but I wanted to share a little of what we have been up to this week. On Monday Gerry and myself took the Gospel to the bus station in Downtown Bakersfield. Gerry preached first with one heckler who started trying to drown out the Gospel towards the end of his message. There was about 80 in the crowd listening and nearly all took tracts. I preached next from Acts 16:31 “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved.” Great attention given by the crowd to the Word as it was preached and several came up and thanked us for the preaching which was a great encouragement.

After the preaching we had two conversations, the first was with an atheist who acknowledged that he didn’t want to know if there was a God because he was his own god. He refused to listen to anything we had to say and kept talking over us by telling us we were wasting our lives. The second was with a professing Christian who came up to us with a joint in his mouth and a person he called his ” baby’s mama.” He told us we should stop judging people because God doesn’t care what we believe as long as we are true to what we believe. We spoke to him from Scripture of his error and demonstrated that he had created a false god in his own mind but was not a believer in the God of the Bible. He demonstrated conviction under the truth of the Scripture but quickly ended the conversation.

On Tuesday morning I was blessed to give the morning devotion at Triumph Baptist Academy where I spoke to the kids from James 4:1-4 on “Friendship of the world makes you an enemy of God.” After speaking to the school I went to share the Gospel door to door with 3 others from church. We knocked about 30 doors and gave tracts to every house. I was teamed with my Pastor and the first door we knocked was a man named Steve who had been studying with the Jehovah Witness cult. He was taught by them that we believe Jesus was God based on only 1 verse. Pastor spent bout 30 minutes taking through Old and New Testament passages that declare Jesus to be God. He then moved into a Gospel presentation where he showed Steve that only by God becoming man and paying the price of sin can He save mankind. Steve responded well and said he would visit church and study the verses we showed him further.

On Wednesday I took our youth group door knocking and e gave tracts to nearly 100 houses and spoke to a few people about their souls. On Friday I preached chapel at Triumph Baptist Academy from 1 John 5:21 on “Keep yourselves from idols.” The Lord appeared to work mighty in the service and gave me great assistance. On Saturday I had to miss outreach because I was privileged to serve as best man in my friend Shawn’s wedding. We have been close friends for the last 5 years and it was a joy to witness him enter the covenant of marriage.

This week I was able to publish the Kindle version of my second book called, “Joy To The World.” This is a Christmas devotional which traces the prophecies of Christ’s birth from Genesis through the Old Testament. I included well beloved Christmas carols and the histories behind them as well as seasonal poems, and thoughts on the joys of the season. We will add it to the our books section soon but for now you can find it on Amazon by following the link below. It would be a blessing if you would purchase a copy. We will also be publishing a paperback version and a Barnes and Noble ebook.

God Bless,

Rick Garland
