Outreach, Outreach, Outreach

It has been some time since I have posted a ministry update but I felt I should if for no other reason to help me remember what I have been up to recently. After attending the Super Bowl outreach in New York city earlier this year we began a large and extensive door to door outreach project. In February we launched what we call around our church the “Good News for Bakersfield” campaign. This is an effort to reach our entire city with the Gospel.

For those who don’t know about this let me explain. Bakersfield is a city of about 400,000. Jesus gave us the command to share the Gospel with all nations and every creature.

“And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.” (Matthew 20:18-19)

“And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” (Mark 16:15)

In a world of 7 billion people how can this “every creature” commission be kept? Well it can be hard to get to each person without lining them up. This is not to say we shouldn’t try. Tracting, sign holding, and street preaching are great methods of evangelizing but we wanted to fulfill this commission as literally as we could in our church. The result was the burden to share the Gospel with every single household in our city.

We mapped our city into precincts, appointed captains over the various precincts and gathered volunteers to help in each area. We have copies of the Scriptures. Some are English only some are bilingual. We have Romans, Johns, and Johns & Romans combined. We include an insert That shares the plan of salvation and give them our church info in case they have questions. We see this as less church centered and more Gospel centered. We are not advertising our church we are sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ and providing church info as a side in case they reach out.

We are canvassing these to every home in town not locked down by gates. We estimate there are 120,000 homes that we can get to. We have been putting much of our time and effort into organizing, mapping, stuffing and distributing these portions of Scriptures. We estimate to have given out about 23,500 since February. This has been a church wide effort with many getting involved who normally don’t do evangelism.

On June 22nd we traveled to Redwood City, California for the 40th anniversary of Redwood Baptist Church where I first heard the Gospel. We were blessed by hearing the preaching and the fellowship of the believers there. Amy and I were able to spend some time taking the Gospel door to door in that city before we left.

On June 29th our local single A baseball club allowed us to invite as many guests as we wanted and hold a church service dubbed “Sermon on the Mound” at their ballpark. Our pastor preached from near home plate and we were able to distribute Gospel tracts as well. This was a huge blessing. The church got behind it and we gave out 1,500 Scripture portions with invitations to the service at the ballpark in one day.

I have been asked to lead a team at the upcoming Super Bowl outreach and I feel the burden of the responsibility while embracing the opportunity that God has given me. Pray for me as I prepare for this great task. Thank you for praying for us and following our ministry and teaching. It is a blessing to serve the Lord. We are not always what we should be and the evidence of our sin nature is demonstrated all the time. We praise the Lord that one day we will be like Him and see Him as He is. Brethren, pray for us.
