Christians and Birth Control

18 02 2021

I hesitate to touch on extremely controversial topics but I do feel this is one area that needs to be addressed. Birth control is pretty much accepted as normal by all people both Christian and secular. This wasn’t always the case. In the middle of the 20th century, most Christians were either suspicious of birth control or rejected it altogether.

As feminism grew in America it crept into the church and over several generations, the issue of birth control became more difficult to address. We no longer considered what the Bible said on the issue. All of our defenses of its use came from secular reasoning, not Biblical discernment.

As you can probably tell I am not in favor of its use. This is not an unbiased look at the issue. This is a consideration of the issue from a Bible-based worldview. Let me give you a breakdown of why I oppose birth control.

1. Chemical birth control causes abortion.

When we talk about birth control most people refer to the pill or chemical birth control. Since I believe life begins at conception that life is killed by the functions of the pill. One of the functions of birth control pills is to thin the lining of the uterus to prevent implantation if fertilization does occur.

This kills the fertilized egg thus killing that new life. If abortion is murder (and it is) then this is also murder. We soothe our conscience by saying that it’s only if the method fails but that does happen anywhere from 3%-5% of the time. The fact that the life is small and we don’t know it’s being killed makes us feel better but I don’t think it clears us of guilt in the eyes of God.

2. Birth control of all types is an affront to the sovereignty of God.

The Bible is clear that God is sovereign over all things. The Bible establishes this truth which is not debatable.

“In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will.” (Ephesians 1:11)

God works all things according to the counsel of His own will. This must include the giving of life. I don’t see any way to explain that His authority ends there. It doesn’t, He is in complete control of all things.

“But our God is in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased.” (Psalm 115:3)

I’ve heard people say that God can overrule their birth control if He wants to give them a baby. I guess my question would be this: why would you try to stop birth if you believe God is sovereign? It’s God who gives life so who are you trying to stop with birth control?

If the answer is God then you have a problem. You are admittedly and actively trying to stop God from working. I never want to work against God.

3. Birth control usurps God’s authority.

The Bible is very clear that God is the giver of life.

God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things.” (Acts 17:24-25)

God is the giver of life. We see God opening and closing the womb in Scripture. This wasn’t a temporary practice until we were able to open and close the womb ourselves. This is God’s area to control not ours.

So Abraham prayed unto God: and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maidservants; and they bare children. For the Lord had fast closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah Abraham’s wife.” (Genesis 20:17-18)

In the story of Jacob with his wives Rachel and Leah we see the Bible declaring over and over that God opened one womb and closed another then when He was ready He opened the one that was closed and closed the one that was open. He granted Sarah a child when she was naturally too old because He is sovereign over the womb.

Consider Jeremiah the prophet. God didn’t just know him after he came into existence nor did He ordain Jeremiah a prophet after conception but before Jeremiah was even conceived God knew him and ordained him a prophet.

Then the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.” (Jeremiah 1:4-5)

Consider what Jacob told Rachel about her lack of children.

And when Rachel saw that she bare Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister; and said unto Jacob, Give me children, or else I die. And Jacob’s anger was kindled against Rachel: and he said, Am I in God’s stead, who hath withheld from thee the fruit of the womb?” (Genesis 30:1-2)

He asks if he is in the place of God to decide if she will have children. I believe that when we try to stop conception we are usurping the authority and place of God. This is serious business.

Be very careful in these types of decisions. If God is the giver of life then we may find ourselves fighting against Him. Is that the place we want to be in? You may raise the objection that this isn’t the right time but shouldn’t God decide when it is or isn’t the right time?

Do we believe that God can’t be trusted? Do we believe He will do us wrong? I surely hope not.

Blood on Their Hands

11 02 2019

I know many Christians got excited during the Presidents State of the Union speech this year. Unfortunately most Christians support “their party” regardless of what they say or do. There is so much bias on both sides in politics. We tend to support our party when in power then criticize the other party when they do the same thing that we did. This is one of many reasons why Christians should think twice about political involvement.

For me, I am not a Republican or a Democrat, I am a Christian. I must judge all things by the standard of the Scriptures whether that goes in favor or against my “assigned” political party. Too many Christians support President Trump without question because he is a Republican and they have been made to think that they need to support “their guy.” I am not one of those people. I feel the need to judge him according to the Scriptures.

I keep hearing people say that Trump is the most pro-life President in history. If this is true then it’s a sad truth because his pro-life stance very rarely goes beyond words. The State of the Union speech highlights that for me. He campaigned that he would defund Planned Parenthood and Christians (even those who claimed to not like Trump) said we have to vote for him to fight abortion. I didn’t believe it and I didn’t vote for him. I’m still proud of that.

In his first 2 years in office he didn’t defund Planned Parenthood. In fact he signed every spending bill that included PP funding. He was so dedicated to building his wall that he shut down the government to try and get the money for it yet he refused to close the government to save the lives of children. The Republican Party controlled both houses of Congress and the Presidency for 2 whole years and failed to stop funding PP which receives around 40 percent of their funds from taxpayers.

This is the same party that passed several defunding bills under President Obama which he vetoed. Why did they defund it several times under a Democratic president but couldn’t defund it one under a Republican? The truth is that they don’t want to defund PP. When they knew it would be vetoed they gladly passed the bill but if there was a chance it would get signed into law they didn’t. Christians need to get this in their heads the Republican Party is every bit as much for abortion as the Democrats. They only pay lip service to get your votes. These last 2 years are clear evidence of this truth.

At his State of the Union speech President Trump railed against the late term abortion laws in New York and Virginia. He said he wants to “…prohibit the late-term abortion of children who can feel pain in the mother’s womb.” Of course this devalues all children who don’t meet this criteria. All children are human beings and all from the moment of conception are distinct persons deserving of human rights.

The President also said that children are made in the image of God. I saw my Christian friends posting this quote with their own words saying things like “thank you Mr. President.” I found nothing to be thankful for in that statement. If he believes that why has he continued to fund the murder of these image bearers of God? Why not shut down the government to save them rather than build your wall? If he really believes that statement of course he is more accountable before God for allowing them to be killed, but I don’t think he believes that as much as he believes it will rally the pro-life community to keep supporting him which it did.

This president and this Republican party have no principled stand against the murder of babies. Don’t be fooled into believing such nonsense. A vote for them will be a vote for the continued murder of babies. The blood of the children cries out against this president and these in Congress. It will cry out against those who vote for them as well I believe. It’s time for action not words, and we as Christians need to realize that we are being used as political pawns. Over 60 million children have been murdered legally in America and in my lifetime Republicans have controlled both houses of Congress and the Presidency for 8 years with no attempt to end the bloodshed. The only attempts being made when they know it can’t possibly pass. Enough is enough.

Murder is not Subjective

20 02 2018

Abortion is murder. There I said it. Now that the truth is out I want to address a blatant hypocrisy of the pro-abortion crowd. In America if you kill (whether intentionally or not) the unborn baby of a woman it is counted as murder. If you kill a woman with child then you are charged with double murder or if you just kill the unborn child you are charged with murder. This is a Biblical point of view.

If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman’s husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life.” (Exodus 21:22-23)

The utter hypocrisy is that our society counts the unborn child as a life unless the mother doesn’t want it, then we say it isn’t. This is insanity. Either it is a life or it isn’t but our desire for it can’t decide that. Can you imagine if we applied that logic to anything else. Divorce laws go out the window because she is only my wife if I want her to be. Killed your 12 year old? Well if you didn’t want him he wasn’t really alive.

The truth is that we know it’s a life and we suppress that because we love our sin. This is what the Bible says.

“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness.” (Romans 1:18)

This verse is saying that we suppress the truth because we love our unrighteousness. The truth is that we know a baby in the womb is still a baby but when it suits our wicked desires we deny it yet when we feel it’s something we want we claim it’s a life. Men and women are in prison for murdering unborn children and yet abortionists do the same thing everyday.

Men and women are in prison for hiring someone to kill a person and yet women pay abortionists every day to violently rip a baby apart. We think we are soothing our conscience but one day the conscience will stand to condemn us on the day we stand before God in judgment. We must repent as a society of this double-minded standard and protect all life.

Abortion: Republicanism is not the Answer

22 01 2014

I am sitting here on the 41st anniversary of the Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion in America. Consider that point for a moment and let it sink in. For 41 years in the United States of America it has been perfectly legal to murder children many being murdered as they are in the process of being born. Many of them have their heads crushed so that  they can be pulled from the womb of their mothers, and many others . It is not often mentioned but in California child murder was legal several years before the 1973 Supreme Court ruling and the precedence of it being legal may have even led to the 1973 ruling. It’s not mentioned because many Christians and Republicans want to forget the fact that the Republican Messiah Ronald Reagan then Governor of California was the one to legalize abortion on demand.

For far too many years we as believers have seen abortion as a political issue. Growing up I was always taught that abortion is wrong and we are against it like we are against high taxes or the welfare state. It was an issue we had to fight at the ballot box. For far too long this has been the common thought and it needs to stop. Being more Republican will not end child murder in this nation. We are told that if we just get a Republican President or good Supreme Court picks, or if we control Congress then we can see abortion end. Let’s look at the evidence before us. It was a Republican Governor who legalized abortion on demand in California long before the Supreme Court legalized it.

The second condemning factor in our political theology is the fact that from 2011 to about 2006 Republicans, pro-life Republicans controlled the U.S. House of Representatives, the U. S. Senate, the Supreme Court, and the White House. With around 5 years of nearly complete control of the United States government the Republican party made no attempt to stop abortion. Once they lost control we were all told again if only we can get Republicans elected then we can fight these things. IT IS A LIE!!!!! It’s a lie folks. They will never end child sacrifice in America and it is not a political issue. It is a moral issue, it is a Bible issue.

Many Christians don’t want to touch the abortion issue outside of politics because of several reasons. The first being our fear of being hated. The church today, many churches look so much like the world that they have been accepted. Our preaching is soft, more self help then condemnation. Our song services are more like a rock concert then anything else and every part of the church “experience” has been bent towards making people comfortable. Our services are man centered more then God centered. Churches have stopped evangelizing the lost and have turned to putting on a good show to draw people in. Churches now do “outreach” through doing community projects and the world looks at us with kindness because we make them feel as comfortable as we can. Jesus told us the opposite should be true, “If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.” (John 15:18-20)

The church has been lulled to sleep, made to believe that we can only reach people by making them like us but this is not Biblical thinking. We are commanded to preach the Gospel which means telling people they are sinners and will perish eternally apart from faith in Christ. Those who are living in sin should hate us because we bring light to shine on their darkness and they hate the light. “And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.” (John 3:19-20) Jesus was hated and despised and we are called not to be loved by those who hated Him but to bear the same reproach He bore, “Let us go forth therefore unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach.” (Hebrews 13:13)

The third reason we settle back and assure ourselves being Republican is enough is our fear of suffering for the Lord. If you stand outside abortion clinics and call men and women to repentance you will not only be hated and have your name and reputation dragged through the mud but you may also be laughed at, mocked, hit in the face, pushed, spit on, and arrested without cause. All of these are things Jesus endured for you and yet we draw the line and saw, “I’ll bear His reproach by going to church and telling all my friends I’m Christian but it stops there I mean after all I might get hurt.” Listen, to be a Christian in Paul’s day and today in most of the world means probably losing your reputation, home, family, fortunes, possessions, and even your life and millions in the face of that have said bring it on. All to Jesus I surrender is a lie that most American believers sing but the words are vain. As R.C. Sproul Jr. said we need to stop being middle class sissies. I’m worried about many in our churches today who want to follow Christ in name only but refuse to suffer anything real for His name.

The answer to abortion is not the Republican Party. It is not legislation, or laws. Someday perhaps laws will be written that protect innocent babies but the answer is the Gospel. To go out and convince women not to murder their babies. To share with them the fact that they are sinners and in need of a Savior, and yes that the alternative is to suffer the eternal vengeance of a holy God. We need to stop calling women who willingly kill their babies victims as if they are somehow exempt from God’s punishment. We need to look on them with the compassion of a sinner who themselves has been saved from their sin. To be quiet to protect ourselves is the most hateful thing we could do and I fear many of God’s children will weep one day having realized what they have done.

Chuck Smith’s Abortion Hypocrisy

13 02 2011

This article is in response to a conversation that Pastor Chuck Smith had on the subject of abortion. Unfortunately hypocrisy is a good word for what happened in that conversation. In this conversation the woman caller obviously does not want an abortion and is emotionally drained from even debating this issue in her heart.

She said the doctors say the conjoined twins may not live more than a day, and we must keep in mind that she gave no indication as to how far along she was. Pastor Smith goes on to tell her that due to the chance of a low life expectancy the Lord probably would not condemn her for having an abortion. My first issue is simply this, what does life expectancy have to do with anything? Someone may not live long so killing them is acceptable? The second issue here is that he uses Scripture to assure her that God would not condemn her if she had the abortion.

“The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst they said to him, Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. Now in the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say? This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them,  “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground. But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said,  “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.”(John 8:3-11) This passage is of a woman who had already sinned, not one contemplating sin. The Bible gives no reference to Jesus forgiving unrepentant sinners, therefore we must conclude that she was repentant. He said to her, “go and sin no more.” He did not say go on and sin cause God will forgive you anyway. To use this passage as he did was a deception and a misuse of the Sacred Text.

In the second conversation, Pastor Smith attempts to defend what he said. In doing so he both lies and shows his own hypocrisy. He first says that he is totally opposed to abortion but then adds that there are certain circumstances in which it is acceptable. Life begins from the womb(Job 31:15, Psalm 22:9-10, Psalm 139:13-16, Isaiah 44:24) God is the giver, sustainer, and taker of life. This is final, at no point is abortion right. Pastor Smith first used the term “fetus” rather than baby, which caught my attention immediately. He then avoided the term babies in the plural and called it a baby with two heads as if trying to de-humanize it. In his second call he said that she stated that her life was in danger which she never said, and that the baby would not  live for more 5 minutes after birth, which she also did not say. There are many cases where doctors are wrong. Doctors have said babies were dead yet the baby ended up being born alive, or that the baby would have a problem, and yet it came out healthy. They ignore the fact that God in His glorious sovereignty may have a purpose in this, and they treat it as a mistake that she should fix. WRONG!!!!! Many conjoined twins have been born, and have lived many yaers together. There was no point where they referred her to an agency to help. Let me say this, you cannot be completely against abortion…..except. No, your either for it or your against it. PERIOD! It’s time christians everywhere call Chuck Smith to open repentance for this grevious sin against God and against the children involved.
