Prayer Letter (April-September)

16 10 2021

Greetings:
We greet you in the name of the Lord and hope this letter finds you well. I apologize for falling woefully behind in my ministry updates.

Our family is doing well. We were in a serious car accident in April and we are still dealing with physical and financials issues stemming from that. The kids are in 1st grade and doing well in school.

Street Ministry:
Our street ministry in Bakersfield has been good. We had a homeless outreach in Fresno in April and a missions trip to Los Angeles in July. We hosted the trip in partnership with Sports Fan Outreach International and Liberty Baptist Church of Norwalk.

Since our last update we have given out 1,827 tracts, 43 Bibles, 67 John/Romans, preached 19 open-air sermons, and saw 4 call on the Lord for salvation.

During this time we also were able to feed 123 people and give away 84 hygiene packs to those in need.

Prison Ministry:
The prisons have opened although not completely. I am updating my clearances in order to get back in. Pray for a smooth process.

We praise the Lord for His goodness and thank you for your prayers and support in this great work of the kingdom.

Please consider supporting us financially as well as with your prayers. You can give a tax deductible donation.

The Gospel Beacon (Jan-March 2021)

3 04 2021

Greetings:
We greet you in the name of the Lord and hope this letter finds you well. The first quarter of 2021 is already in the history books and I’m left pondering the brevity of life. The older I get (turning 40 this year) the faster time seems to slip by me. Society is slowly opening back up which allows a little more opportunity for Gospel work.

Our family is doing well and the kids are growing. Dale and Sky are progressing in Kindergarten. Amy is doing great in her first year as a teacher. They are excited to finish this year in a few months and move on to first grade.

Street Ministry:
Our street ministry in Bakersfield has been good with people here pretty much out and about as usual. I was able to attend my 9th Super Bowl Outreach which was held in Tampa, Florida. The crowds were huge because the state was pretty well open and the hometown team was in the big game.

It amazes me how little we recognize the providence of God in those kinds of things. God put the big game in one of the most open States during a pandemic and brought the hometown team there in order to get more local people out and able to receive the Gospel.

Over the last quarter, we gave out 272 tracts, 3 Bibles, preached 18 open-air sermons, and saw one call on the Lord for salvation.

Prison Ministry:
I hear rumblings that the prisons may be opening soon. Please pray with me to that effect. Pray for the men in there waiting to hear the Gospel and pray for a mighty revival once we are allowed back in. I have been keeping all my paperwork and training updated so that once allowed I can get started right away.

We praise the Lord for His goodness and thank you for your prayers and support in this great work of the kingdom. Please pray for an upcoming outreach I am leading called Invasion L.A. which will be from July 10-18.

Please consider supporting us financially as well as with your prayers. You can give a tax deductible donation.

2020 Year in Review

28 01 2021

Greetings:
We greet you in the name of the Lord and hope this letter finds you well. I wanted to take a moment and look back at 2020. While many have focused on the hardships and irregularity of 2020, I wanted to look back at all that God has done for us. We need to be sure that we are not focused inward but rather upward. God was still sovereign in 2020 and Jesus was and is still seated upon His throne.

Our family is doing well and the kids are growing. Dale and Sky are progressing in Kindergarten. Amy miscarried two babies this year and although it was a trial we know that the Lord gives and the Lord takes away. We are confident the Judge of all the earth does right. We found great comfort in Romans 8:28-29.

Street Ministry:
We have continued our ministry at the bus station. It seems to be business as usual there. The Courthouse has also picked up. People still take tracts and stop to have Gospel conversations with us. We also took the Gospel door to door a lot this year. We found this to be a great way to get the
Gospel out to people in our city.

Prison Ministry:
Not being able to go into the prison hasn’t stopped me from ministering in other ways. Pray for the men as their ability to attend services has been greatly hampered. I have still been able to minister by letters as well as by sending in Bibles, tracts, and Christian books.

Please pray with me that the prisons will reopen and that God is using this time to prepare hearts for a great revival in there. I believe that this is all within God’s plan and that we need only trust Him.

Year in Review:
21 Bibles distributed
586 John/Romans distributed
20 Gospel of John distributed
5 New Testaments distributed
1,151 tracts distributed
16 Christian books distributed
1 Called on the Lord for salvation
126 Prayer requests prayed over
290 inmates heard the Gospel
21 letters exchanged with inmates
30 sermons were preached in the open air

We praise the Lord for His goodness this year and thank you for your prayers and support in this great work of the kingdom.

Please consider supporting us financially as well as with your prayers. You can give a tax deductible donation.

Prayer Letter (April-June 2020)

21 08 2020

Greetings:
We greet you in the name of the Lord and hope this letter finds you well. We are still on lock down. The prisons are still closed so I have been finding other ways to minister the Gospel. The good news is that people are out and moving around more so that creates more opportunity to get them the Gospel. Our family is doing well and the kids are growing. Dale starts Kindergarten this year which is an exciting new step in his life. Sky is working on some preschool materials to help her prepare for next year when she starts Kindergarten.

Street Ministry:
We don’t want to waste this time of societal change. We want to redeem the time and keep busy in Kingdom work. We have continued our ministry at the bus station. It seems to be business as usual there. The Courthouse has been put on hold due to less in-person court hearings. We have moved to include some neighborhood outreach. We are giving away tracts and Scripture house to house. With more people staying home we figure it’s time to take the Gospel to them.

We preached 5 open air sermons, gave away 427 tracts and 520 copies of John/Romans booklets.

Prison Ministry:
Not being able to go into the prison hasn’t stopped me from ministering in other ways. I have been ministering by letters to 4 men and I sent 2 Christian books to an inmate requesting them as well. Pray for the men as their ability to attend services has been greatly hampered. I was blessed to hear that on one yard the men were using their 2 hour yard time each day to gather in worship.

Please pray with me that the prisons will reopen and that God is using this time to prepare hearts for a great revival in there. I believe that this is all within God’s plan and that we need only trust Him.

Prayer Letter: January-March 2020

22 04 2020

Greetings:
We greet you in the name of the Lord and hope this letter finds you well. We are on lock down as you are I’m sure. The prisons are closed for now and there has been little opportunity for street ministry with so few people out and about. I was able to get some ministry work done in January and February. I pray this ends soon so that church and ministry can continue.

Street Ministry:
I was able to attend the Super Bowl Outreach in Miami, Florida. This was my 8th year attending and it was a blessing. We preached in Downtown Miami as well as South Beach. The crowds were amazing and we had many good one-to-one conversations. I know of a few who made professions of faith and many others who took tracts or Bibles.

In town we had good outreaches at the Courthouse and bus station. It seems like a lot of tracts were accepted and we had good responses to the preaching. I was hoping to preach at the NFL draft in Las Vegas but the virus panic cancelled the event. I am hoping to make a few trips to Los Angeles this summer to preach but it depends on the circumstances of course.

I gave away 15 John/Romans as well as 188 tracts. I was able to join Arks of Bulrushes ministry at the abortion clinic. We preach the Gospel and offer help to the women. We talked to 10 or so women and saw 1 turn away and keep her baby. We are in an ongoing effort to help her during her pregnancy.

Prison Ministry:
The prison ministry started off really good until services were cancelled. I was supposed to preach the Easter revival but that was cancelled as well. Before they closed the facility I was able to give away 19 Bibles, 1 Gospel of John and 2 John/Romans. I gave away 11 Christian books, 26 tracts, and preached to 195 men. I also received 126 prayer requests and corresponded with 4 men.

2019 Year End Update

21 04 2020

I guess I forgot to post my last ministry update for 2019 so here it is. Sorry it’s so late and thank your for your prayers.

Greetings:
We greet you in the name of the Lord and hope this letter finds you well. We were blessed to finalize our adoption in November. We welcomed Dale Michael Garland and Skyeisha Grace Garland to our family. The Lord’s hand was evident both in how quickly we got them as well as in how fast the process took. Many families struggle for years to adopt and we were blessed to be able to complete the process in just over a year.

Street Ministry:
We have had good crowds on the streets and many people showing an interest in the Word of God. I was able to preach at the PAC 12 Championship game in Santa Clara for third straight year. I gave out 100 tracts and got to preach to hundreds more.

Prison Ministry:
The Lord allowed me to preach the Christmas banquets in Lancaster which was a blessing. The sermons led to two or three divine appointments with men struggling with the truth of the Gospel. I gave out a Bible and New Testament, 111 tracts and 9 Christian books to the men. I was able to preach to 149 men over the last two months.

2019 Year in Review:
I almost hate to make summaries since ministry is far more than mere numbers but I do think it’s helpful to look at what has been accomplished while giving thanks to the Lord.

Bibles: 147
New Testaments: 7
John/Romans: 112
Gospel of Johns: 1
Tracts: 1,813
Books to inmates: 31
Professions of faith: 13
Prayer requests received: 938
Men attended preaching: 969
Letter ministry: 8
Food ministry: 111
Clothing given out: 100

Praise the Lord for a fruitful 2019 and may He increase the field of labor in 2020!

Prayer Letter: August/September 2019

4 10 2019

Greetings:
We greet you in the name of the Lord and hope this letter finds you well. I apologize for getting this letter out so late but September was an extremely busy month.

Street Ministry:
We had a hot summer in our street ministry. I can’t complain I suppose because the Lord blessed us with a short summer. Our hot months typically stretch from May to October but this year they only lasted from June to August with a few warm days in September.

Our usual spots are the Courthouse, the bus station and the Planned Parenthood abortion clinic. We were able to proclaim the Gospel at all of them over the summer.

Prison Ministry:
The Lord has been stirring the hearts of men in both prisons. The men in Lancaster are seeing tremendous answers to prayer including several of the brothers having life sentences reduced. A few men have been released and are serving the Lord with their families now.

The men in North Kern are being stirred with a particular desire for holiness and a desire to share the Gospel on the yard. I was able to minister to a man at our county prison over the summer as well. I hope he continues to seek the Lord.

Prayer Requests:

*Financial support
*A home repair financial need of $3,200 to be met
*Upcoming outreaches in December: PAC 12 Championship outreach; Fiesta Bowl Outreach; Christmas revival at Lancaster prison
Please consider supporting us financially as well as with your prayers. You can give a tax deductible donation.

Prayer Letter (May-June 2019)

10 07 2019

Greetings:
We greet you in the name of the Lord and hope this letter finds you well. We were blessed with a cool start to the summer this year. It usually reaches the 90’s by May and the 100’s by June but we had rain and cold through most of May and the month of June was pretty moderate with only a few hot days. This is a blessing because the temperature in the chapels can reach 105 to 110 with very little air circulation when it’s hot outside.

Street Ministry:
We are getting involved with some outreach at our local abortion clinic. I was able to be out there a few times over the last 2 months. The Lord allowed us to give out 92 tracts as well as preach to several good listening crowds.

Prison Ministry:
The Lord has been stirring the hearts of men in both prisons. The men in Lancaster are seeing tremendous answers to prayer and the men in North Kern are being stirred with a particular desire for holiness and nearness to the Lord. I find this so encouraging.

North Kern has been plagued by lock downs the warm weather tends to have more violent outbursts and problems between inmates. Pray that this subsides for the rest of the summer. I gave away 20 Bibles, 20 John/Romans, and 140 tracts. I have been able to preach to 70 men with 3 calling on the Lord for salvation. I was able to minister by letter with 8 men.

Please consider supporting us financially as well as with your prayers as we desire to serve the Lord full time in the Gospel ministry. There are so many people who need to hear the Gospel and so little time to labor and serve the Lord in this life.

Prayer Letter March/April 2019

17 05 2019

Greetings:
We greet you in the name of the Lord and hope this letter finds you well. I mentioned in our last letter that our foster son needed surgery. We made it all the way to prep when they realized there was an error on the court paperwork. We had to postpone and are still waiting for another date.

We have seen major improvements in our foster son and even though both kids are dealing with a lot of trauma we have been able to phase him out of therapy which is a blessing. We have our yearly home inspection in a few weeks for our foster care license so please be in prayer. We have a new social worker so we don’t know what to expect.

They changed some rules which forced us to erect a fence around our above ground pool. It was about $350 we really couldn’t afford but the blessing is that it could have been $300 more. The Lord allowed us to save money by buying a used one and the seller delivered, painted and installed it. Keep praying that we can adopt the kids in the coming months.

Street Ministry:
We have been blessed with cooler weather which is a great blessing when ministering on the streets. We are getting involved with some outreach at our local abortion clinic. I am praying a door opens to do that on a regular basis. Over the last 2 months the Lord allowed us to give out 112 tracts on the streets as well as have several good conversations with people about the Gospel.

We are going to Fresno (about 2 hours away) quarterly to reach out to the large homeless population there. We were there March and gave away 40 Bibles as well as provided a meal for 111 people. We were able to engage some about their souls as well.

Prison Ministry:
I was contacted about a man in our county jail on attempted murder charges. I was able to visit and share the Gospel with him as well as send him some books to help him. Pray for Luis and I will try and keep contact with him to keep sharing the Gospel. In Lancaster we are seeing great answers to prayer among the men and a great desire among the men to share the Gospel. One yard has even arranged a weekly outreach time.

North Kern has been plagued by lock downs but in those times they have been open God has worked in the men’s hearts. I gave away 43 Bibles, 40 John/Romans, and 431 tracts. I have been able to preach to 158 men with 7 calling on the Lord for salvation. I have sent 4 Christian books to men requesting Christian materials.

Please consider supporting us financially as well as with your prayers as we desire to serve the Lord full time in the Gospel ministry. There are so many people who need to hear the Gospel and so little time to labor and serve the Lord in this life.

Garland Family Prayer Letter (Jan-Feb 2019)

5 04 2019

Greetings:
We greet you in the name of the Lord and hope this letter finds you well. Our year started off very busy which is something we are grateful for. Our family is doing well and the kids have been keeping us busy. Our foster son has a need for minor surgery which we hope to have done in late April. We are waiting for court approval.

We have had complications in the adoption process. It seems a family member has come forward for the kids. But it doesn’t seem to be good environment for them nor to our knowledge have they ever met this person. We are worried they may lose all of the progress and stability they have had over the last 6 months in our home.

Pray with us that the judge will allow us to adopt them. We have the support of the social worker and a therapist but the Lord ultimately decides these matters. It may be God’s will for us to never adopt and to only be a sort of orphanage to care for many children temporarily. If that is His will we are certainly pray for it but we love these kids and would like to make them a part of our family forever.

Street Ministry:
The year started with outreach at the College Football Championship weekend in San Jose, California. It was a great weekend with a few other evangelists. We stayed in a beautiful home in Oakland that has been around for over 100 years. We were rained out one day but the others were very fruitful. Hundreds of tracts were given out and the Word was preached.

In February I attended my 7th straight Super Bowl Outreach in Atlanta, Georgia. The crowds seemed larger than in most previous years. Good conversations were had, the Lord brought many across our path who were ready to hear and receive the Word. Our local street ministry continues. Over the last 2 months we gave out 62 tracts as well as 3 Bibles and 1 John/Romans

Prison Ministry:
In January I was able to renew my clearance at both prisons. The new system allows my clearance now to only expire every 5 years. This is a huge blessing. The men in reception at North Kern have been ready to hear the Word. I had 3 men call on the Lord and 3 others who confessed they were concerned about their souls. 20 Bibles and 20 Johns/Romans were given away and 100 tracts went to the men.

My first time back in Lancaster was also a blessing. Many of the men were sharing stories of answers to prayer. The new prison laws are allowing many of them early release and they are all finding good churches. We had another man released in February so we all laid hands on him and prayed after issuing a charge to walk in God’s path on the outside like he has on the inside.

Please consider supporting us financially as well as with your prayers as we desire to serve the Lord full time in the Gospel ministry. There are so many people who need to hear the Gospel and so little time to labor and serve the Lord in this life.
