School Shootings: Questions and Answers

26 02 2018

Much of the world was caught off guard by the deadly shooting at a Florida public school. Unfortunately much of the talk since the shooting has not been very helpful. Let me place a few disclaimers on here. I am not a pro-gun conservative nor am I an anti-gun liberal. I don’t buy into the our side vs. their side politics. I believe all political issues need to be examined in the light of Scripture not party rhetoric.

I’m not especially for guns nor am I especially against them. So my perspective is as neutral as I believe it possibly can be. I often joke that Republicans gave away my 4th Amendment after 9/11 so I don’t feel especially bound to protect their 2nd Amendment.

The liberal argument of more gun laws is not the answer since guns are not the problem. These guns have always been accessible and yet the shootings are a recent development. We need to figure out why in the last 20 years school shootings have become common but the last 200 years they were not. What has changed? When we figure out the problem we can figure out the answer.

Another problem with more laws is that laws don’t change anything. The same logic would say to end drug abuse just outlaw drugs. Yeah, they are outlawed and yet drugs are still a problem. If we outlaw rape perhaps rape will stop. Oh yeah, rape is illegal and yet they happen. It’s illogical to say that if we ban guns then gun violence will stop.

We also cannot lose sight of the problem of big government. The FBI knew of the threat and failed. We need to dismantle this oversize government that fails time and time again to actually protect us. We give up our rights for safety and end up less safe. Both sides of the political spectrum need to let go of this proven falsehood that government is the answer.

Conservative talking points are just as off base. The President and many others would have us believe that giving everyone guns would solve the problem. Many honest gun owners will admit that it is very difficult hitting a target. This is true on a shooting range with ear coverings and focus. Imagine how difficult with adrenaline pumping with panic and fear in the air?

I believe you would create more casualties. There is also the issue of licensing these teachers and maintaining their practice and their guns. If its required the guns would have to be provided for them and there is the issue of forcing teachers to carry. I believe in the Constitutional right to carry and the right not to carry.

The problem is found in the human heart. I’m not sure why the liberal even thinks school shootings are wrong. They have to borrow from the Christian worldview to arrive at that conclusion. If we are all animals then killing each other isn’t wrong. By having an issue they are admitting there is intrinsic worth in human life that does not exist elsewhere in creation.

If evolution is true then survival of the fittest would have to be considered. Their opposition to school shootings lies in direct opposition to the very foundational principles they claim to hold dear. The secular worldview is a maze of contradiction.

The cause of school shootings is not too many or too few guns so both sides are wrong. It is found in our teaching our children that they are just animals, life has no purpose or meaning and there is no judgment after this life. The secular worldview is the cause of this problem.

Why didn’t it surface until now? The answer is that over the last 50 years we have grown more and more humanistic that now the fruit is beginning to be harvested. We have taught them that they are animals so they act like animals. We taught them that there is no judgment so they act as though there is no judgment.

The answer is the Gospel. To teach our young people that they are created in the image of God which gives them worth. That they were created to glorify Him and that He will call them into account one day for their lives. That life doesn’t end at death but that eternity goes on without end. The answer is the Gospel and the solution will never be found in Washington or Sacramento. The pulpits of America and the God fearing parents are the solution. This can end if we get back to the truth and not the lies of secular humanism.

Murder is not Subjective

20 02 2018

Abortion is murder. There I said it. Now that the truth is out I want to address a blatant hypocrisy of the pro-abortion crowd. In America if you kill (whether intentionally or not) the unborn baby of a woman it is counted as murder. If you kill a woman with child then you are charged with double murder or if you just kill the unborn child you are charged with murder. This is a Biblical point of view.

If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman’s husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life.” (Exodus 21:22-23)

The utter hypocrisy is that our society counts the unborn child as a life unless the mother doesn’t want it, then we say it isn’t. This is insanity. Either it is a life or it isn’t but our desire for it can’t decide that. Can you imagine if we applied that logic to anything else. Divorce laws go out the window because she is only my wife if I want her to be. Killed your 12 year old? Well if you didn’t want him he wasn’t really alive.

The truth is that we know it’s a life and we suppress that because we love our sin. This is what the Bible says.

“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness.” (Romans 1:18)

This verse is saying that we suppress the truth because we love our unrighteousness. The truth is that we know a baby in the womb is still a baby but when it suits our wicked desires we deny it yet when we feel it’s something we want we claim it’s a life. Men and women are in prison for murdering unborn children and yet abortionists do the same thing everyday.

Men and women are in prison for hiring someone to kill a person and yet women pay abortionists every day to violently rip a baby apart. We think we are soothing our conscience but one day the conscience will stand to condemn us on the day we stand before God in judgment. We must repent as a society of this double-minded standard and protect all life.

A Failed Worldview

5 12 2016

Secularism is not only a failed worldview but an inconsistent one. Without God nothing makes sense. This is not more apparent then when viewed through secularism.

I know many who claim abortion is not murder because it’s not a baby in the womb. They call it a fetus which of course leads to more irony because that very word means “little person.” Then they have a “baby” shower and throughout the course of their pregnancy they call it “their baby.” Truthfully they know it’s a baby but they have to deny it because they want to kill it without feeling as though they are a bad person.

The reason is that we all know that murder is wrong. God has commanded it and He has revealed it to us. We all have this knowledge but we suppress the truth because we love our sin. The Bible has already declared this to be true.

“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness.” (Romans 1:18)

The word “hold” in that verse means to “suppress.” We as sinners suppress the truth because we love unrighteousness. People love the freedom to murder other human beings and so they dehumanize them in order to ease their conscience. If we found a microscopic organism on Mars we would call it life on Mars yet we deny the life in the womb and thus us the inconsistency of secularism.

I meditated on this the other day when I attended a baby shower for an unsaved family member. This person is completely behind the trans-gendered movement. She would say that gender is decided by a person and they have the right to express it however they decide.

The problem is that her baby shower was all in pink. I pondered that throughout the day. She even had a “gender reveal” celebration. From her own worldview she would agree you have no right to decide someones gender or to have them express it a certain way.

In spite of that her she was determining her baby was a female and celebrating it in pink. The truth is that she knows there are only two genders assigned at birth and she knows it’s appropriate for them to be expressed certain ways. She sins against her own conscience to hold a secular worldview and sins against that worldview at the same time.

The point is that the secular worldview will always violate itself because it’s inconsistent. The secularist must borrow from the Christian worldview to even accuse me of being wrong because wrong requires absolute truth and law presupposes a lawgiver. The truth is that people who hold to this madness called secularism do so because they want to deny the One who might hold them accountable.

It is a cry of autonomy that does not exist. It’s a myth that will one day be revealed as such. It seeks to deny that there is a day coming when we will answer for how we live. A hatred for God is the sole motivation. If you hold this worldview I urge you to turn from such madness and submit yourself to the righteousness of God found in Jesus Christ.

For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith. For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.” (Romans 1:16-22)

Concerning Atheism

15 10 2013

When I speak to professing atheists I am always amazed at the amount of faith they need in order to maintain their religion. I say religion because there is no evidence at all for things that atheism holds to and there is too much evidence against their beliefs that I must conclude it takes leaps of blind faith to be an atheist.

Let me start by saying there is no such thing as an atheist. If you profess to be one then I’m sorry but it’s quite impossible to be an atheist. If you’re reading this and you call yourself an atheist then ask and answer a few questions within yourself. Do you know everything? By this I mean do you possess all possible knowledge in the universe?

The answer you have to give of course is no. The next question is simply has there ever been a time that you didn’t know something and then one day you discovered that knowledge? The answer there must of course be yes. Next question is simply, is it possible and I mean logically possible that in all of the knowledge in the universe that you do not yet possess that there is ample evidence for God?

The answer if you’re honest will of course be yes it is possible. This means one of two things either you’re not an atheist but an agnostic because an agnostic admits there may be proof somewhere of God but they have not found it so they are not sure if God exists. The other option is to admit that your atheism is a belief or religion and that you have faith that God does not exist but there is no proof that He does not.

Another problem with atheism is that it violates reason and logic. That’s right it violates reason and logic. The atheist has to look at the world around them and conclude that everything we see came from nothing. Even if you go back to the big bang where matter supposedly exploded how do you account for the matter?

It is illogical to assume something came from nothing or that nothing can create anything. The only explanation I hear from atheists is that they don’t know where everything came from but that goes back to my last point if you don’t know then there is a possibility of God in that bit of knowledge you lack.

There is also the question of order. How can chaos create order? Well the logical answer is that it cannot. Therefore all of the evolutionary theories of origin or unreasonable and illogical and can only be accepted by faith. Where did the laws of nature come from? Laws cannot organize and write themselves and if they happened by mere chance why are they absolute. Absolute and random cannot coexist.

The order in seasons, day and night, birth in females only, birth to our own kind, the extremely complex workings of the human body none of this could have happened by random chance and without a Creator it is impossible to explain.

Most atheists would consider themselves scientific and yet the very definition of science is something that can be recreated in a lab. The problem is evolution cannot be recreated in a lab nor can their many theories of origin. There is nothing scientific about evolution. Even evolutionists don’t believe in evolution.

Most of the save the whales people are supposed evolutionists and yet evolution teaches the survival of the fittest. It is completely contrary to evolution to save a species from extinction in fact by the logic of evolution to save a weak species would be to corrupt nature not assist it.

Where do morals come from to an atheist? This is one I have never had an atheist answer because if they say they are learned by parents or society then can one really be punished for murder when that was taught to be okay or accepted by society? Can we really call slavery wrong or evil? It was after all accepted and encouraged by society.

Even atheists have to admit the presence of a moral law they just deny the lawgiver which is illogical. Why does Christianity make atheists so angry? I know Santa Claus does not exist and therefore seeing him at Christmas time does not make me angry. I know there is no tooth fairy so I have no anger towards those who teach their kids that one exists.

To be quite honest the only reason they would be angry is that deep in their hearts they know He exists. They know that their worldview cannot explain origins, order, moral or natural laws, or anything else.  This makes them angry because they want to love their sins. They know if there is a lawgiver then there will be a time to give account for themselves.

We are told they deny the knowledge of God in order love their law breaking, “ For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold(suppress) the truth in unrighteousness; Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.” (Romans 1:18-22)

Denying the existence of God will not make Him unexist. IT will not keep us from giving account one day to Jesus Christ, “And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.” (Acts 17:30-31)

Don’t be a fool, “The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.” (Psalm 14:1) The fact is there is a Creator who has revealed Himself to mankind not only in nature, not only in the Bible but in the person of Jesus of Nazareth, “And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.” (1 Timothy 3:16)

Not only has God revealed Himself to us but His laws as well in the ten commandments. He has also condemned us all as lawbreakers, “Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.” (Romans 3:19) He as a holy, just and righteous being has every right to condemn all of humanity to endless torment in hell for violating His laws but instead of doing this He Himself paid the penalty of our crimes, “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.” (Isaiah 53:5)

Having punished Jesus for our sins on the cross God can now pardon us and still be just. In return for having paid the penalty of sin for humanity God simply calls on us to repent of our sins which means to change our mind about our sin. To see it as something that condemns us before God and to put our faith in Jesus Christ. This means to claim for ourselves the payment He made on the cross.

We are told to, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.” (Acts 16:31) To believe on Him means more than just believe that He was historically real, or that He was indeed God in the flesh. To believe on Him means trust that what He did on the cross was for you and to trust in that alone for salvation.

God has promised if we do that He will give us a new heart with new desires and we will never perish. The promise is for you and your children if only you will receive it, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Romans 10:13) Won’t you trust Him today?
