“‘Not called!’ did you say? ‘Not heard the call,’ I think you should say. Put your ear down to the Bible, and hear Him bid you go and pull sinners out of the fire of sin. Put your ear down to the burdened, agonized heart of humanity, and listen to its pitiful wail for help. Go stand by the gates of hell, and hear the damned entreat you to go to their father’s house and bid their brothers and sisters and servants and masters not to come there. Then look Christ in the face — whose mercy you have professed to obey — and tell Him whether you will join heart and soul and body and circumstances in the march to publish His mercy to the world.” William Booth
“It will not do to say that you have no special call to go to China. With these facts before you and with the command of the Lord Jesus to go and preach the gospel to every creature, you need rather to ascertain whether you have a special call to stay at home.” Hudson Taylor
So many over the years have given their lives for the spread of the Gospel. In our present day Satan has succeeded in distracting the church with money, comfort, and technology that we see little of the sacrifice made by our forefathers. We have more wealth, time, and ways to spread the Gospel today and yet we don’t. We concern ourselves with careers, college, sports, amusements of various kinds, and pretty much anything that keeps us from the task at hand. We have early retirees, and people on disability, which are not crippled but qualify for monthly checks from the government.
These who have every chance to sell houses and lands and the ability to self support on the mission field or in church planting and yet they stay home watch television and play on the internet. Wasting the years in hum drum hobbies that perish with the using. The common cry is, “well I’m not called” that statement has in large part become a crutch that we run to in order to preserve our life of ease and comfort. While of course we are occupied with our toys here, people hunger and thirst for the Gospel. Many groups with no or very little Gospel saturation. The church has never had more money than now and we waste it on the things of this world rather than the never dying souls of mankind.
Do you need a call? Knowing the command of the Lord to go and knowing the need do we really need a call? How about the call from below “send him to testify to my brothers lest they also come into this place of torment.”(Luke 16) We have the call from the earth, “Come over and help us.”(Acts 16) We have the call from Heaven “Go ye therefore and teach all nations.” (Matthew 28) It’s time we start saying, “Do I have a special call to stay home?” I promise you God does not call 95 % of Christians to make money, own houses, and live the American dream, and then call a paltry 5 % to go spread the Gospel. It is probably the other way around but we have ignored the calls. The time has come for us to examine our place in the Great Commission and to give up our lives for the task at hand.
“And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel’s, But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.” (Mark 10:29-30)
